"New Opportunities versus Old Mistakes: European Companies in Japan's High Tech World"
OUTLINE: Japan today is an important technological power, and is still leading in
several areas of High-Tech. After years of stagnation, the Japanese R&D
is-at the moment-in a period of radical restructuring. The changes present
extraordinary opportunities for those European companies which will know how
to take necessary action to leverage benefits.
The seminar will be based on a similar presentation given recently at
Stanford University, and transmitted by TV to 100s of Silicon Valley
companies, but it will specifically address problems and issues facing
European companies in Japan.
SPEAKER:Having graduated with a PhD in Physics from Cambridge University (Trinity
College), Pr Gerhard Fasol has an outstanding track record of achievements
in Japanese R&D since 1984. As early as 1990, Fasol was Manager and Chief
Researcher of the overseas R&D Laboratory of a major Japanese Electrical
Company. Fasol is one of the few foreigners ever to have been appointed
Professor and regular faculty member of the University of Tokyo, dept. of
Electrical Engineering. As co-founder of a Japanese government research
program on spin-electronics, Fasol is the first foreigner to lead and
complete an elite "Sakigake" (=pioneer) research project of the Japanese
government. Presently, Fasol is founder and CEO of Eurotechnology KK, a
leading high-tech consulting boutique working on a variety of business
projects ranging from business restructuring, acquisitions, outsourcing, to
R&D-related technical projects. Some of the world's largest corporations as
well as medium sized companies and start-ups from US, Europe and Japan are
among Eurotechnology's customers.
