"English Information in the World of Japanese Finance"
OUTLINE:
This seminar will examine whether it is realistic to expect information
and disclosure from Japanese companies and government in English, and
whether the available information will be sufficient by itself. A recent
illustration of the problem is the increase in foreign investors buying
Japanese blue chip stocks for their investment portfolios. One aspect that
defines an international blue chip stock is the level of the company's
disclosure in English. In the case of Japanese companies, however, it might
be unrealistic to expect companies with a secure shareholding base and those
that are set up as co-operative structures to worry about listing in the US
market or providing copious amounts of English language information.
The presentation will highlight ways in which English language information
from Japanese sources is being disseminated worldwide and identify a number
of resources for finance-related information in English. The presentation
will also address issues associated with the Japanese approach to creating
websites based on the presenters experience working within a Japanese
financial institution. The paper will be illustrated with specific
reference to the Mizuho Securities RESEARCH & LINKS website which
disseminates English language resources on Japanese finance, economy,
politics and law.
SPEAKER:
Mr. David Harvey has worked in the Japanese finance industry for 16 years
and his current responsibilities include the concept and development of the
Mizuho Securities RESEARCH & LINKS website (formerly the IBJ Securities
RESEARCH & LINKS website). He is a frequent commentator on the Japanese
economy and world of finance on CNN, CNBC, Reuters TV and Television Tokyo.
He was a presenter at the Joho 6 International Conference (Stockholm
September 1999). Mr. Harvey is also
a director of the Asian Finance Group, an Australian-based consulting
company involved in research into global financial markets and finance
related translations
